Discover the Historic Sites and Tours on Bald Head Island NC

Bald Head Island NC has been an important fixture in American history since the 1500s, when the island first started showing up on regional maps. It was once home to a British fort and hospital during the Revolutionary War. It contained several Confederate gun emplacements during the Civil War. In the 1900s, visitors would come to the island to hunt wild pigs.

All this and more can be discovered by taking in some of the fun and informative tours available on Bald Head Island. Here's your guide to some of the best historic sites and tours on the island.

Visit Old Baldy

Old Baldy is one of Bald Head Island's most prominent and historical fixtures. Rising high above the trees, the lighthouse is one of the first things visitors see when arriving by ferry. But, it's even more majestic when seen up close.

Old Baldy is North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse and it remains one of its most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can climb the lighthouse's 108 steps for a picturesque 360-degree view of the island. There's even an on-site museum where you can learn more about the lighthouse and the island's seafaring history.

Take a Walking Tour with Bald Head's Ghosts

Ghost tours can be found in practically any historically-significant town, but on Bald Head Island, our ghost tours are the real deal. At any time you might see a ghostly specter of one of the island's former residents, walking along the marsh.

Of course, the guides on the Sail Shop's Ghost Walk know where all the most haunted spots on the island are and they take guests right to them. While walking through the spooky sites, guests will learn all about the pirates, river pilots, and lighthouse keepers that still roam the night.

The Ghost Walk is only available in the summer months and advanced reservations are required. Call 910-457-4944 to reserve your spot.

The Enchanted Island Treasure Hunt and Story Hour

The Enchanted Island Treasure Hunt and Story Hour is a fun-filled time for children aged 5 to 12. It features professional actors and performers that guide the youngsters on an engaging treasure hunt through Bald Head's past. Over the course of the story, they'll cross paths with pirates and dig for gold along the cove of North Beach.

The Enchanted Island Treasure Hunt and Story Hour is only available in the summer months and it is appropriate for ages 4 and up. Reservations are not required but they are strongly recommended. Call 910-457-4944 to reserve your spot.
